The Exam

What Is the TMUA? Exam Format, Syllabus & Scoring

The Test of Mathematics for University Admission assesses mathematical thinking for applicants to Mathematics, Economics and Computer Science degrees at top UK universities.

Two Papers, 150 Min

Computer-based at Pearson VUE centers. Two back-to-back 75-minute papers, 20 multiple-choice questions each.

No Calculator

Pen-and-screen mathematics only — no calculators or dictionaries. Arithmetic and algebraic fluency must be sharp.

Topics Covered

GCSE/AS-level algebra, sequences, coordinate geometry, trig, logs, calculus — plus Paper 2 logic and proof.

Scored 1.0–9.0

A single relative score, one decimal place. No pass or fail — and wrong answers don't cost you points.

2027 Entry · Major Change

Oxford Has Retired the MAT

In January 2026, Oxford discontinued the Mathematics Admissions Test. From the October 2026 sitting, Oxford applicants to Mathematics, Computer Science and related joint courses sit the TMUA instead — 40 multiple-choice questions in 150 minutes with no calculator, replacing the MAT’s long, open-ended problems. If Oxford is on your UCAS list, TMUA preparation is now compulsory, taken in the October window, and the old MAT archive no longer prepares you for it. (Physics and Engineering applicants now sit the ESAT; several social science courses sit the TARA.)

Our Method

How Our TMUA Preparation Works

A clear, mentor-led pathway from diagnostic to test day — personalized around your target score, current level and exam date.

1

Diagnostic Baseline

A practice TMUA test covering Paper 1 and Paper 2 in timed conditions, using official past papers or questions in a similar style. A tutor reviews your results and explains where marks are being lost — across calculation speed, algebra, logic and problem-solving.

2

Customized Study Plan

Built around your target score, current level and test date. Most students benefit from 4–6 months of preparation, scheduled around UAE school breaks and busy exam weeks, with more full-length mocks added as the test approaches.

3

Interactive Learning Sessions

1-on-1 expert mentoring: Concept Teaching for Paper 1 (56 hrs), Logic Training for Paper 2 (15 hrs), and Strategy Sessions on elimination, question selection, mental math and time management. Targeted assignments and doubt-resolution follow every class.

4

Timed Mocks & Review

Regular timed practice sets build speed and stamina. About two months before the exam, students take full timed mock tests mirroring the real format, followed by tutor review with step-by-step worked solutions.

5

Final Prep & Adjustments

The last couple of weeks focus on polishing: short timed quizzes, speed drills, revision and confidence-building, plus test-day routines and stress management. Students graduate knowing exactly how to approach the TMUA with confidence.

Resources

Resources, Materials & Tech

Everything students need to practice, track progress, and walk into the test centre prepared.

Official Syllabus & Past Papers

Built around the official UAT-UK TMUA Test Specification and Notes on Logic and Proof, plus the free official practice paper.

Interactive Whiteboards

Screen-sharing and dynamic geometry tools, with a proprietary learning platform that lets tutors coach in real time.

Computation without Calculator

Strong mental math, estimation and scratch-work habits, using a calculator-sketch-sheet approach to reduce errors.

TMUA Practice Portal

Adaptive practice sets, timed drills and AI-powered analytics, with dashboards highlighting what needs more work.

Mock Test Simulators

Full-length, TMUA-style papers under timed, no-calculator conditions — on screen, just like the real test centre.

Resource Library

TMUA past papers from 2016 onwards, solution keys, topic-based problem sets and short video explainers in English.

The Bigger Picture

Why TMUA Preparation Matters for Oxbridge, Imperial & LSE

Oxford received 23,329 undergraduate applications and made 3,891 offers in the 2025 cycle; Cambridge receives about six applications per place. A good TMUA score won’t secure an offer on its own — but it gives your application another strong academic signal. Many students set a personal target of 6.5+.

By the time you apply, much of a UK application is already fixed: predicted grades, references, personal statement. The TMUA is one of the few remaining components you can still move — marked against a published specification, on a published scale.

  • Academic Rigor — 40 problems in 2.5 hours builds real mental stamina, like moving from casual swimming to marathon training.
  • Stress Avoidance — a structured plan prevents last-minute cramming, burnout and anxiety, so test day is calm, not frazzled.
  • What You Can Control — a rare part of the application where the work you put in translates fairly directly into the result.
  • Starting early gives you time to build the skill rather than cram it — preventive healthcare for your academic career.

Local Expertise

TMUA Tutors Who Know UAE Curricula

Being based in the UAE isn't just about a Dubai PO box — it shapes how we teach A-Level, IB, AP and CBSE students.

Curriculum Awareness

British A-Levels (Edexcel, AQA), IB (Math AA/AI), American/AP and Indian (CBSE/ISC). IB HL students get extra graph-sketching practice; AP Calculus students get early coverage of the algebraic tricks their syllabus skips.

Schools & Locations

Dubai students from Dubai College, GEMS Wellington, DSO International; Abu Dhabi from Raha, SABIS Saadiyat; Sharjah from City School or Sharjah American — we factor in every academic calendar.

Test Centre Logistics

Two sittings a cycle — October and January. Cambridge and Oxford applicants must sit in October. We track registration, fees and Pearson VUE centre logistics for you.

Language & Support

Fluent English tutors familiar with multicultural UAE classrooms, clarifying TMUA-specific terms like "necessary" and "sufficient" conditions that school syllabuses rarely name.

Seasonal Scheduling

We know UAE summer and winter breaks well — using July intensively before school resumes, or planning a final review right after winter holidays.

Local Know-How

We've navigated Dubai traffic to get students to exam centres, tracked Eid schedule changes in Abu Dhabi, and adapted to Sharjah's school timetable — the local flavor global prep companies miss.

January 2027 Sitting

Key Dates to Know

Booking opens 26 October 2026 (3pm GMT), registration closes 21 December 2026 (6pm GMT), the test takes place on 8 January 2027, and results are released on 8 February 2027. Registration fees are £78 within the UK/Ireland and £133 elsewhere (roughly AED 655). Cambridge and Oxford applicants must sit the October window instead — check every university on your list before booking January.

FAQs

TMUA Preparation FAQs

Who should take the TMUA exam?+

Students applying to Mathematics, Computer Science or Economics courses at universities that require the TMUA. Cambridge requires it for all three; from 2027 entry, Oxford also requires it for Mathematics and Computer Science. Always check your chosen university’s admissions requirements before registering.

How do I register for TMUA in the UAE?+

Register through the official UAT-UK registration system and book an authorised Pearson VUE test centre. For the January 2027 sitting, booking opens 26 October 2026 and registration closes 21 December 2026 (6pm GMT), with the test on 8 January 2027 and results on 8 February 2027. Cambridge and Oxford applicants must take the October sitting instead.

What is the exam format and timing?+

The TMUA takes 2 hours 30 minutes across two parts: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge and Mathematical Reasoning. Students answer multiple-choice questions without a calculator or dictionary.

What topics does TMUA cover?+

Paper 1 covers algebra and functions, sequences and series, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration and graphs of functions, plus GCSE-level probability and statistics. Paper 2 covers the logic of arguments, mathematical proof and identifying errors in proofs.

Most students benefit from starting several months before the test. A 4–6 month preparation plan allows time for diagnostics, topic revision, timed practice and targeted improvement. Hale’s full TMUA program covers 71 hours of teaching across both papers.

What's a good TMUA score?+

TMUA scores range from 1 to 9. There’s no universal “good” score, since universities assess applications differently — a 6.5+ score is often used as a challenging preparation target, rather than an admission guarantee.

Can calculators be used in TMUA?+

No, calculators are not permitted in the TMUA. Preparation should include mental mathematics, estimation, accurate scratch work and timed problem solving without calculator support.

Are there any practice tests or resources?+

Yes — students can use the official TMUA Test Specification, Notes on Logic and Proof, and free practice materials and past papers. Timed practice is especially useful for learning the exam format and improving speed.

How much does TMUA coaching cost in Dubai/Abu Dhabi?+

Costs vary by tutor experience, session length, class size and whether you choose 1:1 or group preparation. Hale’s complete TMUA program (71 hours) is priced at AED 10,650, exclusive of VAT. Prices can change at management’s discretion, so please confirm current fees with our team.

Why should I prepare at Hale versus self-study?+

Hale combines a TMUA diagnostic, personalised study plan, 1-on-1 expert mentoring, targeted practice, mock tests, worked solutions, doubt resolution and progress reviews with periodic parent-teacher meetings. Self-study can work well for some students, while guided coaching adds structure, feedback and accountability.
